How Order of the Sinking Star works

Four worlds, four rule sets

The Hearty Heroes of Hauling, The Promise, Mirror Isles and Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes each start as their own puzzle game with their own hero. Because they can be played in any order, you pick which rules to learn first.

Sokoban-style grid puzzles

You push, pull and swap blocks and crystals on a top-down grid. Puzzles start simple and escalate quickly, with consequences you do not see coming until you move.

A rewind button for mistakes

A rewind mechanic returns you to an earlier point when you get stuck. Previews call it essential, because many hero abilities make one wrong push hard to recover from.

Heroes with exact powers

Valens pushes, Tif pulls and Isidore swaps places with blocks. Other heroes charm enemies, shrug off attacks or redirect rivers, so knowing each power precisely is how you solve a room.

Explore at your own pace

The overworld is open from the start, you can revisit worlds whenever you like, and no ending requires solving every puzzle. If one puzzle blocks you, you can choose a different one.

Over 1,000 hand-crafted puzzles

Steam lists more than a thousand puzzles, and Jonathan Blow has said the game can take up to 250 hours at a normal pace. Several guest designers contributed puzzles alongside the Thekla team.

These pieces fit into one loop. You start in the overworld as the Queen, learn to push blocks and rewind mistakes, then pick a world and learn its hero's power. Each world teaches a rule set, a few hours in the rule sets start to combine, and the combinations produce harder puzzles that need heroes from more than one world. Because the order is yours, you can step away from a stuck room and return after learning something elsewhere.
